Story from Around the Way: This week’s story comes from Carol Jackson. She takes us back to 1960s Alabama through her experiences during the Civil Rights Movement. The story was captured at the Overdrive’s “Music & Stories” event series. 

Melanie Coffee was a journalist for the Associated Press and was assigned to cover an anti-Muslim protest in Bridgeview, Illinois shortly after the September 11th attacks. As an “African American reporter going in to an area known to have racial tensions, at a time when emotions were still raw, from that September day,” Melanie was not sure what she was in for, but what she witnessed in front of a mosque that day, she will never come to forget.

I got 3rd place at the Moth StorySLAM last night. Cheryl (center) and Deb (right) definitely told amazing stories.
